Justin currie – what is love for

No, this is not a philosophical look at just what that perplexing feeling is for, but the review of an album by a talented Scottish singer/songwriter.

Justin Currie, ex-frontman for 80’s/90’s pop-rock band Del Amitri has recently released his first solo album “What is Love For”. The absence of a question mark in this title may very well suggest that the “question” is rhetorical and as such, not a question but a statement made by a soul in despair. Somebody who falls victim to this feeling rather easily and is constantly made unhappy by it.

The title track is a slow burner, but it does make you think - What is love for? The tune show-cases Currie’s vocal talents, his voice powerful yet soft. Moving down the track list, we come to “Walking Through You”, which presents a haunting melody backed up by some beautifully crafted lyrics - “When you dance, and you’re baby’s dancing too, Then I will walk through you.”

Many tracks on this album revolve around love. Probably the catchiest number is “If I ever Loved You”, which has a more up-beat drive and resurrects hints of melody from Del Amitri’s hey-day. Skipping forward once more, “Still in Love” is a slow piano medley, where Currie’s voice truly shines through. Finally we are presented with “No, Surrender” - my favorite track. This track is a 7 minute long beast, where Currie basically bitches about life. No area of society gets out without any scars, and he seems to really enjoy taking a stab at “The Man”; the people at the top that non of use really like.

This album oozes experience, intellect and feeling. It lacks, sadly, the necessary hooks that will drag it into the mainstream, but I don’t think that is what Currie wants anyway.
